From Santa Monica to the Statue of Liberty: Volkswagen supports Alex Flynn’s Trans America Challenge


"We love cross-country drives. There’s no better way to really see the U.S. than from ground level. But we have to admit that Alex Flynn’s Trans America Challenge is a bit more impressive than your average road trip.

Flynn’s plan is to travel more than 3,500 miles across the U.S., raising awareness and funds for Parkinson’s research. His trek —which starts September 5th in Santa Monica, CA and is planned to end October 4th at the Statue of Liberty in New York City—will not just be in a car. That would be too easy. Flynn, a trained athlete diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, plans to cycle, kayak, and swim the route. Along the way, the UK native will challenge himself by climbing Mount Whitney, running 135 miles across Death Valley, cycling to Chicago, kayaking across Lake Erie, and swimming across the Hudson River to the finish line.

We’re supporting his efforts by contributing a pair of 2012 Volkswagen Touareg SUVs. Each vehicle offers 32.1 cubic feet of cargo space and will transport Flynn’s crew, supplies, and equipment, including a kayak, bike, and more." [Read more]

Flat-out Fast: Jetta Hybrid sets speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats


"When you think “hybrid,” you probably don’t think “land speed record.” It’s a good thing no one ever told us that, because a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid recorded the fastest speed ever achieved by a hybrid car on the famed Bonneville Salt Flats, reaching 185.394 mph (298.363 kph).

Since 1914, the Bonneville Salt Flats have been a place where everything that rolls—from hot rods to motorcycles to trucks and more—tries to roll as fast as possible. The Jetta Hybrid raced across the flats—or, as they say in Bonneville, “shot the salts”—near Wendover, Nevada as part of Southern California Timing Association’s (SCTA) annual Speed Week. Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago was behind the wheel for the record runs.

The Jetta Hybrid that Lago drove was specially modified to meet SCTA regulations. To add the kind of horsepower needed to reach more than 185 mph, the powertrain was modified by Volkswagen R&D in Wolfsburg, Germany. And since the Jetta Hybrid is designed to run on asphalt instead of salt, various safety mods were handled by A-Salt Racing and Advanced Product Engineering in Camarillo, California." [Read more]

Ford Delivers Record Number of 40-MPG+ Vehicles, Industry’s Freshest Full-Line Product Portfolio in U.S.

 
"Ford is delivering more fuel-efficient vehicle choices in 2012 than ever before and a fresher new vehicle lineup than any full-line automaker in the U.S.

“Customers are starting to see the true benefits of our One Ford plan,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “With more new vehicle options and an even broader range of fuel-efficient cars, utilities and trucks, Ford is delivering real power of choice for millions of consumers who are paying more attention than ever to what happens at the pump – no matter what the price.”

Ford is offering eight vehicles that deliver 40 mpg or better by year-end – double its number versus 2011 and more than any other full-line automaker. In fact, Ford’s eight-vehicle tally is more than the number of 40-mpg-or-better vehicles Toyota and General Motors offer combined.

Ford also is tripling its electrified vehicle production capacity by 2013, growing its electrified vehicle lineup to six models – including the all-new C-MAX Hybrid. The compact hybrid utility vehicle, which arrives this fall, is expected to achieve 47 mpg, at least 3 mpg better than Toyota Prius v with more performance and technology.

Toyota Motor Corporation Outperforms Industry in the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Initial Quality Study

" Toyota and Lexus vehicles captured five segment awards and five Toyota manufacturing facilities in Japan and North America won plant awards, including one Gold, in the 2012 Initial Quality Study (IQS), more than any other automaker in both categories.

The study also found:

  • Toyota has fewer problems than the premium brands industry average;
  • 15 Toyota, Lexus, and Scion models ranked in the top three of the segments they compete in;
  • Corolla is the highest performing non-premium model, it also ranks fifth overall;
  • The all-new Prius v garnered second place in a closely contested segment; and

"Subaru and Scion dealers are having no trouble finding homes for BRZ and FR-S models. The sport coupes are ranked one and two on the list of cars that spend the fewest days on dealer lots. According to Edmunds, the BRZ takes just four days to turn, followed by the FR-S at five days. On average, it takes dealers 53 days to move new models. Both machines are surrounded by a halo of buzz and plenty of pent-up demand. Subaru began selling the BRZ in the U.S. at the end of April, while Scion gave the first 86 FR-S buyers the chance to come to California for a little track time in their new purchases." [Read more]

""Ja, that ice'll hold ya." Until it didn't, and suddenly a man's 1996 Legacy wagon was at the bottom of a shallow lake in Finland. Three months later, the Subaru wagon was dragged from its freshwater slumber, and while most people would just write the car off or at most turn it into a parts donor, curiosity got the better of the rescue squad.

Would it run? Just how bad was the damage? Before plunging below the surface, the owner did have time to shut the engine down and get his dogs out, so the boxer four didn't aspirate any water and electrons weren't coursing through the various circuits, two details that likely saved a bunch of damage. After removing a live fish from the engine bay, draining a lot of water from the fuel tank and crankcase, and a fresh fill of fluids and spark plugs, lo and behold, the SCUBA-ru chugged to life on the first try." Honda says Fit EV gets 118 mpg equivalency rating from EPA

 
"The Honda Fit EV has been given a 118-mile-per-gallon equivalency rating by the Environmental Protection Agency, the highest rating of any electric passenger car to date.

Using a 20-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, the Fit EV has a total range of 82 miles in the combined driving cycle. The EPA has estimated the Fit EV's annual electric "fuel" cost would be $500, Honda said in a release.

The Fit EV has a 92-kilowatt motor that creates the equivalent of 123 horsepower, and which also generates 188 foot-pounds of torque. Honda says the Fit EV can be recharged from a low state of charge in three hours with a 240-volt connector.

Starting this summer, Honda is leasing the Fit EV to just 1,110 customers in limited California, Oregon and East Coast markets for a zero-down, $389/month lease for 36 months, basing calculations on a sticker price of $37,415, including destination.

The EPA rates the Leaf as averaging 73 miles per charge, lower than the Ford Focus's 76 miles and higher than the 62 miles for Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s i-MiEV. The Fit's availability will be expanded to other U.S. regions in 2013." [Read more]

Subaru of America, Inc. Breaks May Sales Record

"Subaru of America, Inc. today reported record sales for May 2012 of 29,724 vehicles, a 48 percent gain over May 2011.  The company also reported year-to-date sales of 136,602, a 22 percent gain over prior year.

The all-new Impreza continues to achieve triple-digit sales gains.  May Impreza sales are up more than 235 percent over May 2011; year-to-date sales represent a 170 percent gain over 2011.

Chrysler Group LLC to Hold Mobility Awareness Program

"Chrysler Group LLC’s Automobility Program will host an employee awareness event at company headquarters the week of May 14.

This event is intended to increase employees’ understanding of wheelchair accessible vehicles and adaptive mobility equipment options that enable people with disabilities to live an active and mobile lifestyle.

Chrysler Group has been a leading supporter of mobility vehicle conversions since the 1980s.

“Chrysler Group was the first automaker to offer a commitment to lighten the financial burden of adaptive equipment installation on vehicles within the United States,” said Steven Beahm, Vice President – U.S. Sales Operations. “We are proud to host this important event with some of the industry’s leading conversion companies displaying the latest in adaptive driver and passenger equipment and vehicle conversions.”

The week-long event is being held in conjunction with the first National Mobility Awareness Month and the debut of Chrysler Group’s new Automobility Program website at www.chryslerautomobility.com.

The employee awareness event will begin with a town hall from 3-5 p.m. Monday, May 14. Representatives of several mobility conversion companies will discuss their products and answer questions. A Dodge Grand Caravan R/T minivan with a lowered side-entry conversion will be on display at the event.

The program will continue on Tuesday, May 15, with a day-long exhibit of vehicles converted for use by those with mobility limitations. A converted minivan will be displayed in the tower lobby, and eight additional vehicles, demonstrating various conversion technologies, will be stationed in Tech Plaza for the day. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with representatives from the Chrysler Group and various conversion companies available to provide information and answer questions.

While this event is designed for all Chrysler Group employees, the company’s designers and engineers are particularly interested in meeting with the attending up-fit companies to examine the latest equipment that can help people with disabilities to enter, exit, and operate a new vehicle." Volkswagen Reports 31.5 Percent Increase In April U.S. Sales

"Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported 37,525 units sold in April, a 31.5 percent increase over prior year sales, 38 percent increase year-to-date and the best April since 1971.

"The demand and enthusiasm for our products continues at a strong pace and we are beginning to see the fruits of our investments pay off, marking the best April in over forty years," said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. "As our sales continue to outpace the industry, we are investing in our infrastructure to ensure sustained growth."

Last month, the company announced expansion plans for VW Credit Inc. (VCI) facility in Libertyville, IL. The ground breaking took place on April 20 for a 30,000-square-foot expansion of the facility. The multimillion-dollar expansion, to be completed early next year, will accommodate approximately 150 new jobs that VW Credit, Inc. expects to create through 2018. This comes on top of the additional 1,000 jobs that the company announced it would add at its manufacturing plant in Chattanooga, TN to meet growing demand of the 2012 Passat.

Jetta sedan, including the enthusiast GLI model, remains the volume leader for Volkswagen with sales totaling 13,754, while Jetta SportWagen totaled 1,904. Sales of the Chattanooga-built Passat continue to rise with record sales of 10,096 units in April, the second month breaking 10,000 units.

The 2012 Beetle, recently named to Ward's list of "10 Best Interiors," sold 2,065 units. The Beetle TDI Clean Diesel Coupe will go on sale late summer 2012. New Ford Taurus SHO Set to Make Appearance in Screen Gems’ “Think Like a Man” based on Steve Harvey’s Best-Selling Book

 
"The new 2013 Ford Taurus SHO will hit movie screens across the country as part of its integration into Screen Gems’ highly anticipated film “Think Like a Man,” based on Steve Harvey’s best-selling book, which opens in theaters April 20.

Volkswagen Up! Named 2012 World Car of the Year in New York

"The jurors presiding over the annual World Car of the Year awards at the 2012 New York Auto Show have awarded the top honor to a car that is not offered in the U.S.

In fact, it’s not even offered in all of North America.

Nevertheless, Volkswagen’s tiny up! hatchback has beaten worthy rivals including the BMW 3-Series and Porsche 911 to be voted 2012 World Car of the Year.

The jury, consisting of 66 journalists and auto industry representatives from 25 countries, voted by a majority to name the up! the winner.

They noted that the up! has altered what consumers--outside the U.S.--have come to expect from the city car segment. Of note were its responsive steering, sophisticated suspension setup, efficient engines and high-quality materials and finish.

On a minimal footprint (11.6 feet long) the up! also provides space for four people, plus extremely efficient drive technologies including three-cylinder units for gasoline and diesel fans. The vehicle also comes in three- or five-door bodystyles and in the near future a sporty GT model is expected.

The reason the up! was eligible was because of the competition's rules, which state that to be eligible for the overall World Car award, the candidates had to have been available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning January 1, 2011 and ending May 30, 2012.

One of the runners up in the competition didn’t go home empty-handed. The 2012 Porsche 911 was voted the winner in the 2012 Performance Car of the Year category, beating out the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 and McLaren MP4-12C supercars." [Read more]

The new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine (Ward’s 10 Best Engines Award two years in a row) with variable-valve timing (VVT) offers best-in-class standard 305 horsepower, with 269 lb.-ft. of torque and best-in-class fuel economy for V-6 trucks. New V-6 features 42 percent more horsepower, 13 percent more torque and at least 20 percent better fuel economy when compared to the previous 3.7-liter V-6 powertrain.

The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 with fuel-saving cylinder shut-off and VVT provides 395 horsepower, 407 lb.-ft. of torque and best-in-class fuel economy for V-8 trucks (at least 10 percent better fuel economy when compared to 2012 V-8 powertrain). Volkswagen Launches Electric Car Pilot Program

"Following the lead of corporate sibling Audi, Volkswagen is launching an electric vehicle (EV) pilot program in the United States. Cars will be distributed in specific markets and driven over a nine-month period to gather data for future electric Volkswagens.

Like Audi and other companies, VW modified an existing model for its EV pilot program. In this case, it’s the Golf, known to most Americans as the Jetta hatchback. The 20 test cars will be five-door Golfs, with electric powertrains in place of the standard hardware. The E-Golf is powered by an electric motor that makes 199 lb-ft of torque; VW did not say how much horsepower it makes.

The motor gets its energy from a 26.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Volkswagen did not quote an estimated range, but it did say the E-Golf was designed with energy-saving features. These include three different driving modes and regenerative braking, which are standard features on many other electric cars, and hybrids. The E-Golf can also coast when the driver takes their foot off the throttle.

Twelve of the E-Golf test vehicles will be given to Volkswagen employees, the rest will be distributed in Detroit, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. beginning in April. Volkswagen hopes to acquire data on the effects of climate conditions and driving patterns in the different regions.

Volkswagen will also test charging hardware. The 12 employees in the E-Golf program will get 220-volt charging stations installed at their houses. Every E-Golf will come with an iPhone that, through an app, lets drivers check the status of charging, adjust the air conditioning, and remotely charge the car (if it’s plugged-in). “For a successful market launch of electric vehicles, the way that home chargers are handled is very important, along with easy access to public charging infrastructure,” said Dr. Rudolf Krebs, head of Volkswagen Group E-Traction.

Testing EVs is a significant change of course for Volkswagen, whose previous eco-car efforts were focused on diesels. However, VW isn’t the first company to try an EV pilot program. BMW built an electric Mini, the Mini E, and is now testing electric versions of its 1 Series. Honda loaned a few Fit EVs to Google and Stanford University for testing. Volkswagen to test electric Golf in U.S.

 
"Volkswagen, which has scored big with diesels in the U.S., is about to expand its horizons. It's going to field about 20 Golf electric vehicles in a test, Automotive News reports.

It's only a nine-month test, but it should be at least a start in trying to see how owners will deal with the notion of having to plug in their car every day and other issues. It's a prelude to the e-Golf, which will arrive in showrooms sometime next year, the News says.

Fuel Efficiency Increases

"TrueCar.com provided actual fuel economy numbers from February light vehicle auto sales that indicate TrueMPG increased to 23.2 mpg in February 2012 compared to 21.4 mpg in February 2011, and increased from January 2012 at 22.9 mpg.

TrueMPG is the companys fuel economy measure.

According to TrueCar.com, the TrueMPG for vehicles sold by U.S. manufacturers averaged 21.2 mpg in February, up from 19.0 mpg in February 2011. European manufacturers increased their average fuel economy for vehicles sold from 22 mpg to 23 mpg; Japanese manufacturers increased their average fuel economy from 23.8 mpg to 24.9 mpg; and South Korean manufacturers increased their average fuel economy for vehicles from 26 mpg to 28 mpg." Volkswagen Commits to US$52 Billion in Green Investments

Volkswagen commits to US$52 billion in green investments 
"German automaker Volkswagen aims to drop the average emissions from its new vehicles to 120 grams CO2/km by 2015, as part of a "fundamental ecological restructuring" likely to be worth more than €40 billion (US$52 billion by 2016.

The company says more than two thirds of its entire €62.4 billion (US$82.1 billion) investment programme for the coming five years will be directly or indirectly spent on "ever more efficient vehicles, powertrains and technologies, as well as environmentally compatible production."

VW has been looking to bolster its green reputation since being targeted by campaign group Greenpeace over its alleged lobbying against deeper cuts to EU emissions targets.

The company's new emissions reduction target would represent a 30 percent cut on 2006 levels for Europe's largest carmaker, and a sizeable reduction on its current average emissions for new vehicles of 135.5g/km, which sits fractionally below the E.U. average of 136.1 g/km in 2011.

VW said that under the new plan it wants every new model generation to be on average 10 to 15 percent more efficient than its predecessor, while emissions will also be cut from both production processes and manufacturing plants.

As part of the announcement the company unveiled a new €600 million (almost US$790 million) investment designed to expand its use of renewable energies such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power, in order to achieve a 40 percent reduction in emissions from energy supplies by the end of the decade.

Subaru Launches FirstCarStory.com Allowing Car Lovers to Share Their First Car Experiences Through Animated Storytelling

"Subaru of America, Inc. announced the launch of its First Car Story campaign supporting the all-new 2012 Subaru Impreza. The campaign hub, FirstCarStory.com, features a groundbreaking animation generator that allows users to recreate their first car, tell their story, and see it turned into an animated video, which they can also set to music and narrate with their own voice.  Through Facebook, Twitter, or email, users can share their video with family and friends throughout their social network.

Chrysler Group’s ‘It’s Halftime in America’ Super Bowl Video Earns Second Place in YouTube’s Ad Blitz 2012 Contest

"The votes have been tallied and Chrysler Group LLC has secured the top automotive ranking in YouTube’s Ad Blitz 2012 contest. In it’s fifth year, the YouTube Ad Blitz program is one of the largest consumer polls of Super Bowl ads. Its online and interactive gallery of Super Bowl commercials allows users to view and vote on their favorite ads.

The Chrysler Group’s “It’s Halftime in America” video came in second place overall in the annual contest. “It’s Halftime in America” was created to rally Americas together by using the Chrysler Group and Detroit as inspiration. The Chrysler brand’s “Born of Fire” commercial earned a first-place ranking in last year’s contest.

“’It’s Halftime in America’ is about a mission, not about a product. "It all started in 2007 with a group of rogue Subaru engineers in their version of a ‘skunk works’ department. They wanted to see how a Subaru with a very low centre of gravity would perform.  A test mule based on a shortened legacy chassis was created and the engine was dropped as low as it could go.  Impressed with their progress, the engineering team invited executives from both Subaru and recent investor Toyota to see how this RWD concept drove.  Although initially tentative, a second mule was created from an Impreza platform and spy shots began to show up on the internet like it was Lindsay Lohan fresh off a bender.  History was made and one of the longest and most hyped vehicle developments began.
If automobiles are anything more than a passing interest to you, you have surely heard of the Subaru BRZ by now; maybe not with that name specifically, but perhaps as the Scion FR-S, Toyota GT 86, Toyota FT-86 or Toyobaru.  The name BRZ stands for Boxer (as in the engine configuration), Rear-wheel drive and Zenith (as in the height of achievement) and there you have the idea behind this car.  Subaru feels this car new also fits in with their current “Confidence in Motion” marketing campaign as it is a back to basics sports car. Jeep Compass And Patriot Replacement Delayed Until 2014

"According to Automotive News Europe, the SUV planned to replace both the Jeep Compass and Patriot, has been delayed until 2014.

Originally intended to go into production in 2013, the code-named B-SUV has been delayed so that Fiat can expedite engineering on its European products, like the Sedici compact. The delay also means a one-billion-Euro expansion of Fiat's Mirafiori plant will be pushed back to late 2013. The delays come after Fiat performed a spending review regarding future investments.

The B-SUV is reported to be smaller than both the current Jeep Compass and Patriot, and will be sold in both the United States and in Europe, along with other markets." [Read more]

Subaru Dumps Tribeca

Subaru may be dumping it's Tribeca SUV. 
"Subaru has confirmed it will dump its controversial Tribeca, with the soft-roader-based people mover now likely to disappear from the Australian market as early as next year.

While Subaru has previously hinted at the Tribeca’s demise, Akihide Takeuchi, the car maker’s project manager for its product and portfilio planning division, confirmed to Drive this week that the Tribeca’s US production line would start to switch off in December, ending a troubled seven-year run for a vehicle that sparked one of the fastest facelifts in automotive history.

The Tribeca still sells in significant volumes in Australia - according to Subaru’s local chief executive, Nick Senior, it still accounts for 100 sales a month with very little advertising budget - but Takeuchi says capacity of the Tribeca’s US-based production line is needed for other models in the Subaru line-up." Nissan SUV Concept Finds New Path

Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) announced today that drivers Andrew Aquilante and Bret Spaude return as factory team drivers for Subaru's entry in the Grand Sport (GS) class of the 2012 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.  The first round of the series is at the historic Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, FL, on January 27, 2012.

Fielding a race-prepped 2012 4-door Subaru WRX STI developed specifically to compete in a class replete with rival team cars developing over 400 horsepower, SRRT has been working on a technical progression program for the #35 STI during the off-season.  Traditionally serving as round one of the championship, Daytona International Speedway incorporates a portion of its high-banked oval plus infield complex to create a 3.56-mile, 12-turn road course, which places a high emphasis on maximum power output and aero efficiency.

Co-drivers for the #35 Subaru WRX STI will be Andrew Aquilante of Chester Springs, Pa., and Bret Spaude of Bushnell, Fla., who comprise one pairing in a class of over 30 teams set to contest the Grand Sport class.
SRRT Principal Joe Aquilante noted, "We've enjoyed a very productive off-season, and our team is looking forward to getting back to the business of racing our Subaru WRX STI.  Our drivers have been focusing on honing their physical fitness while our technical staff has been diligently progressing our car development plan.  To say that we're excited for Daytona is an understatement."

Nissan Driving Ahead with Electric Plans

 
"Nissan is showing its e-NV200 Concept at this year’s Detroit auto show -- the Japanese automaker’s latest effort to electrify the automobile.

The automaker has installed the drivetrain from its recently-released Nissan Leaf electric car in a Nissan NV200 multi-usage van. The resulting vehicle “previews a near-future production version of a full electric vehicle designed to provide businesses or families with flexible, roomy interior space, while achieving a dramatic CO2 footprint reduction,” according to Nissan.

The Nissan e-NV200 Concept may look familiar to some. The Nissan NV200 van is due to start service in New York as the city’s exclusive taxi beginning in late 2013. Nissan has been testing an electric variant for some time now, with examples under trial with the Japan Post Service and FedEx in London, according to the Green Car Reports blog.

The new concept, along with the all-electric Leaf, form Nissan’s strategy to capture market share in the growing electric vehicle market.

In Detroit this week Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn said the automaker plans to double sales of its Leaf electric car to at least 20,000 this year. It will also expand availability of the car to all 50 states by the end of the year and will start building the cars in its new manufacturing facility in Tennessee." [Continue reading...]
